John  Johnson, resident of Demopolis, Alabama recently published his book that identifies and profiles all know recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor accredited to the state of Alabama. Published in March 2022, the book, Night To Day: Alabama Recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor, describes and profiles all 33 recipients from Alabama that was awarded our country’s highest award for military valor against a foreign enemy during times of war. The idea for the book came when the author overheard a conversation among teenagers who doubted if any Alabamians had ever received the award.  To Johnson, it was clear those teenagers like most Americans knew very little about our country’s history especially our military history. That realization by Johnson led him to write and publish Night To Day.
The main body of Johnson’s book -- profiles of each recipient -- consists of a photograph; military and biographical data; the actual citation, which describes the action for which the Medal of Honor was awarded; and the most poignant and interesting section of the book, an Epilogue that describes who these recipients were, where they came from, and what became of them.
Most of these recipients came from humble backgrounds and entered the military to seek better economic opportunities.  Johnson believes the book is a "must-read" for all, especially our youth and those of color so they may know the contributions and sacrifices members of their community made in defense of our country.
