HOUSE OF GOLD introduces the Goldbaums, a fictional composite of the famed Rothschilds and a handful of other wealthy Jewish families that rose to prominence in Europe before the original Brexit—the first time Europe split at the seams during the First World War, and centers on headstrong young heiress Greta Goldbaum, at odds with society’s and her family’s expectations of her.

In its lightest moments, Solomons expertly captures pre-war opulence, from luxurious trains to expansive estates and English gardens to cutting-edge fashion of the times. But Solomons also probes issues of identity and assimilation; offers revealing insight into the real causes of WWI and why America entered the fray; and takes a fresh approach to the war, focusing not on the Western Front but on the brutal Eastern Front, where the injuries were devastating and Jewish soldiers were relegated to second-class citizens, as well as women’s lives on the home front, where makeshift hospitals were opened in lavish estates and the maternal death rate rose as doctors and nurses tended to wounded soldiers returning home. The result is a deeply moving novel about universal themes of compromise, loyalty, isolation and allegiance, while offering startling—and dangerous—parallels for the twenty-first century.
